Our story

Bana ba Nkwe e Kgwadi

The Children of the Spotted Leopard

Long before the vineyards, before the bottling and the labels, there was a nation taking root in the soil of the Free State. The Batlokwa trace their line back to Kgoshadi MmaThulare and Kgosi Kgwadi Tabane, whose son Mokgalo became father to the families who would spread out across Frankfort, Reitz, Harrismith and Vrede, and in time as far as KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape and Gauteng. As the senior house of this ancient nation, Batlokwa ba Mokgalong carried forward a single emblem above all others: Nkwe, the leopard, watchful, graceful, and marked by a coat unlike any other. To be Batlokwa is to be a child of that leopard.

It was not always an easy inheritance. Through years of dispossession and forced removal, the Batlokwa were scattered far from the land their forefathers had called home. Yet the nation held its identity even in displacement, and in 1991 the apartheid government finally recognised what had always been true: that the land of Frankfort, Reitz, Harrismith and Vrede belonged to the Batlokwa. Today the Lekgotla la Batlokwa ba Mokgalong carries that story forward, reviving culture, uniting Batlokwa across the globe, and building the economic networks that keep the nation's wealth close to home. Their calendar still turns each year through the Mokgalong Cultural Festival and the gathering at the Moshate, the royal house, and their people still move under one motto: Pele ya Pele, forward, ever forward.

Morara Tlokwa was born from that same lineage of pride. When the label was designed, there was only ever one animal that belonged on it: the leopard, resting beneath a tree, unhurried and sure of its ground, Nkwe e Kgwadi, watching over the harvest the way it has always watched over the Batlokwa nation. Every bottle of Morara Tlokwa wine carries that same inheritance forward: a nation's resilience, its culture, and its right to thrive, poured into something to be shared at the table. It is a small vineyard's tribute to a much older story, one of land rightfully claimed, identity restored, and a people still moving, always, Pele ya Pele.
